Variety is the spice of life

There are instructions of how to do a variation of a Friendship Star under the Block Party Blocks tab. It looks pretty interesting, but requires a little more go-with-the-flow-mentality as it requi...

Welcome to our online Cancer is Sew Done virtual quilting bee where we fight cancer with fabric.

Our first project is following the mod quilters Block Party! and making enough of their blocks to produce a few lap-sized quilts. This is a year long bee with four types of blocks. Follow the instructions for the quilt along located under the BlockParty! Blocks tab at the top of the page. Make as few or as many blocks as you would like. New tutorials will be added, so you could make several kinds of blocks. We'll even send you designer fabric to get you started and a self-addressed envelope to mail your finished blocks in. As your blocks some in, we'll post lots of photos. Of course if you want to post photos and discuss what you are working on, go for it.

The quilts will be auctioned off to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Thanks for joining in what we hope will be the largest charity quilting bee on the Web.

Groups

Welcome everyone!

Here is our first block via the Block Party! The Friendship Star.

Thank you for joining our bee! We are going to have some fun here and do some good. Here's how this group works:

Join

Choose the sub-group or groups you'd like to join. You can suggest a new group too. We would like to have about 12 members per group to start, but we'll see what happens.

For this block, we'll send one block worth of fabric per block type based on the groups you join (limit two), the rest is up to you!
YES dig in to your stash and get creative. You are more than welcome to make as many blocks as you would like. If you're feeling ambitious, we welcome donations of finished quilts as well.

Follow the Block Party! tutorials. We have a tab at the top of the page that goes directly to the instructions for making your blocks. This is a year-long bee.

to wash or not to wash

Just curious, are the majority of us washing fabrics first or not? If the blocks are made by many different people, and some are washed and some are not will there be a funky effect when the final quilt is washed with shrinkage in some places and not in others?

Friendship Star pointers

I have made two blocks this week, one I posted and the other I tossed. I had bobbin issues when making the first one. It's a straight forward block, but one that begs to to mass produced. Next time I sit down to sew I will make 4-5 of them at once. Chain sewing works beautifully with these.

A few other hints I learned:

Press your seams open. This is not something I do, however with all of the points, pressing the seams open results in a flatter block.

Don't be afraid to experiment. There is n… Continue

My fabric

Back in the day when I would regularly buy fabric, I purchased 10 FQs of All Spice Tapestry by Fig Tree Quilts. My sister then got me the charm pack. I packed them away and now I am going to use them in for my Block Party Quilt Along. They are not terribly modern, but i love the colors, and paired with a crisp white they are sure to sing.
