Use all those scraps in your stash and make room for new fabric. We won't give you any fabric for this group, just a place to use all those pieces.

This group is all about pink. If you like it hot, bubble gum, pastel, lipstick, rose petal and everything in between, then this is the group for you.

Welcome to our online Cancer is Sew Done virtual quilting bee where we fight cancer with fabric.

We are currently following the yearlong quilt along Block Party! and making enough of their blocks to produce several lap-sized quilts. The bee covers four types of blocks. Follow the instructions for the quilt along located under the BlockParty! Blocks tab at the top of the page. We are on our second block, the stripey circle.

You can make as many blocks as you would like using your own fabric. You can also make other blocks, not mentioned on the quilt along. We would all love to learn a new block, so be sure to share with us what you are working on. We even encourage you to submit assembled quilt tops or even finished quilts, crib and lap-sized preferred.

New Block Party! tutorials will be added about every three months, so you could make several kinds of blocks. We'll send you enough Fabric to get you started as each of the four blocks is announced. We will include a self-addressed envelope to mail your finished blocks in. As your blocks some in, we'll post lots of photos, but you can post your own photos too.

The block deadline in the top left corner of this page is a suggestion so that we can get enough blocks to start assembling the quilt tops. If you need more time, that's ok.

GROUPS

You MUST join one of our groups to receive fabric from us.

You may start your own group, but you will be in charge of coordinating the group's members. You can decide to supply the fabric or not, and if you want to collected the blocks and make the quilt tops for that group. It's your group, so you set the rules.
To start a group, go to the Groups tab and click add a group.

THE QUILTS

The quilts will be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Prior to the auction, the first of which is tentatively set for fall 2010, there will be an online show where we will display all of your great work.

If you want to get on the list to assemble quilt tops, just send a note to Tracey Lamphere.

Thanks for joining in what we hope will be the largest charity quilting bee on the Web.

Great idea from Don''t Worry Be Scrappy group

The ladies in the Don't Worry Be Scrappy group liked the group icon so much, they wanted to make a block out of it. This is extra credit and you will have to use your own scraps. Thanks to Sue for getting the measurements and instructions to us.

Cut a 6 1/2 inch square for your center.
Cut 2, 3 1/2" squares and sew them together. Attach this unit to the bottom of the center square.
Cut one 3 1/2" X 6 1/2" rectangle and attach to top of center square.
For the sides, cut 4 rectangles @ 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" join short ends and attach one on each side of the center block.

If the pieced sides are all pressed one direction the seams will nest no matter which direction the blocks are turned.
I'm not sure of the best way to handle the seams on the longer sides. If they are pressed with a "twist" you could have all the seams spiral clockwise for nesting.

If you are starting on blocks already remember the quilt top is more fun if the edge pieces of the block are in different positions across the quilt. If your center blocks has a directional picture vary the placement of the sides omn the block during construction. If the center is not directional. The block can just be turned.

I finished my first four blocks for Cancer is Sew Done! They went together easily and I'm happy with the results. I'll mail them off tomorrow. I uploaded photos; not sure I did it right.

Can't wait for the next round!!

to wash or not to wash

Just curious, are the majority of us washing fabrics first or not? If the blocks are made by many different people, and some are washed and some are not will there be a funky effect when the final quilt is washed with shrinkage in some places and not in others?

Friendship Star pointers

I have made two blocks this week, one I posted and the other I tossed. I had bobbin issues when making the first one. It's a straight forward block, but one that begs to to mass produced. Next time I sit down to sew I will make 4-5 of them at once. Chain sewing works beautifully with these.

A few other hints I learned:

Press your seams open. This is not something I do, however with all of the points, pressing the seams open results in a flatter block.

Don't be afraid to experiment. There is n… Continue
